When can I purchase the unaccompanied minors service?

The unaccompanied minor assistance service is available and compulsory for minors traveling on domestic or international flights without parents or guardians and aged between 5 and 11 years old. It is also available, optionally, for children between 12 and 17 years old. You can book and pay at our sales officesContact Center, or travel agencies to secure this service. You can also book and pay at the airport on the day of travel, we recommend you use this option in last-minute cases as when you purchase this service at the airport, it is subject to the availability of space per flight.

What do we offer you?

We have everything ready for your peace of mind and for the children to enjoy their trip and have the best experience from the very first moment.

  • Attention at the counters: we will check your documents and check you in. Please note that you can only check-in at the airport, the digital check-in option is not available. 
  • Boarding lounge: we will accompany you to the boarding lounge and answer any questions you may have.
  • Boarding the plane: our crew will put you in your seat and give you special treatment.
  • On-board care: we will provide you with everything you need during your flight.
  • Baggage collection: if you are traveling with checked baggage, we will guide you to the conveyor belt.
  • Handover to the person in charge: we will accompany you to the airport exit to hand you over to the authorized adult.

When you make the payment, the service is applied for each journey, for each of the children traveling, and for Economy and Business Class flights. Discounts apply when you purchase this service before your trip to our sales offices or by contacting our Contact Center.

Remember that:

  • The rates listed in the table include taxes.

  • For high season these rates may increase up to USD 20 in sales offices, contact centers, and travel agencies. Remember that high season months are June, July, August, and December.

  • These rates are valid as of April 01, 2022. 

For the underage traveler:

  • You must be responsible for your hand luggage, electronics and valuables.
  • On disembarkation, you must wait for a member of our crew to guide you.
  • You must wait at the airport until we help you claim your luggage and accompany you to the airport exit. This will ensure that you are met by the authorized adult.
  • You must be present 3 hours prior to departure for domestic and international flights.

For the guardian or adult responsible for the minor: 

  • Check the requirements and/or authorizations necessary for the exit and entry of minors with the corresponding immigration authority in each country. We recommend that you bring an additional authenticated copy of this authorization, in case the immigration authority of connection or destination requires it for entry or exit of the country.
  • Find out what documentation your child needs so that he or she has no problems when traveling.
  • On the day of the flight, arrive at the airport for the check-in and delivery of the child. Share with us the name, ID number, address, and telephone number of the person(s) delivering and receiving the child.
  • Ensures that the adult accompanying the child is at the airport until the departure of the flight is confirmed and that the person receiving the child is available on the arrival of the flight.

Covid-19 Regulations

  • The child must have his/her biosafety kit: mask/mask (mandatory), gloves, antibacterial gel, among others. Please note that the mask/mask should be changed every 4 hours.
  • Minors must bring their own in-flight entertainment, as Avianca's entertainment system will not be available at this time.
  • Make sure your child's hand luggage is light so that they can stow it under their seat (we recommend that it is only a personal item).
  • Prepare all the required documents for your trip. In addition, check if there are any restrictions or procedures that the child must go through, as defined by the government of the country they are visiting.
Terms and Conditions
  • Fares: The service fee applies for each journey, for each of the children traveling, and for Economy and Business Class flights. Discounts apply if you purchase this service before your trip at our sales offices or by contacting our Contact Center.
  • Confirmation of application: There is a limit to the number of minors accepted on each flight. For this reason, your application must be confirmed for each leg of your journey. 
  • Document check: Before the flight, verify and check that you have the required documents for unaccompanied minors. You will be asked for them at the airport. 
  • Seat pre-assignment: If you make your reservation at the Contact Center or at our sales offices, you can choose the seat where your child will be seated. The pre-assignment is made from the back to the front to place them close to the crew and, if possible, next to other unaccompanied minors. 
  • At the airport: It is very important that the minor follows our instructions. Parents or guardians must complete and sign in legible handwriting the form for the transport of unaccompanied minors. 
  • Minors traveling in connection: Only applies to routes operated by AVIANCA, TACA, Avianca Costarica, Avianca Peru, and Avianca Ecuador. In connections derived from interline agreements or code-sharing with other airlines, this service does not apply.

This service cannot be requested in the following scenarios: 

  • If under 5 years of age.
  • If the minor is under medical treatment or in a disabled condition. The crew is not authorised to provide medication or medical assistance.
  • When incomplete information is found on the form handed in at the airport.
  • In case there is a delay and the child is at risk of losing the connection(s).
  • If the minor is traveling with more luggage than allowed.
  • If the minor is traveling with pets unless the minor requires the company of pets for assistance and emotional support during the flight.
  • A minor between 12 and 17 years of age may not carry another minor between 0 and 12 years of age unless they are the minor's parents. In this case, it must be proven that he/she is the parent of the minor, if so, both may travel without requiring the unaccompanied minor service.

In the following situations minors must return to the airport of origin:

  • There are inconsistencies in the documents.
  • The person authorized to receive the child does not show up.
  • During the flight, there are more than 2 connections and/or an overnight stay at the airport.
