How can I purchase the unaccompanied minor service?

The unaccompanied minor service (recommended) provides full assistance and support for minors traveling alone on domestic and international routes. This service is mandatory for minors between the ages of 5 and 11 traveling without parents or guardians.

From October 1, 2022:

  • The unaccompanied minor service will be available for sale on point-to-point routes only, without connections.  
  • Reservations and payment for the service may only be purchased through the Contact Center, sales offices and/or travel agencies up to 48 hours before the flight.
  • Passengers will no longer be able to purchase this service for any flight dated after January 15, 2023.

From November 15, 2022: 

  • The unaccompanied minor service will be available for sale only for domestic routes in Colombia and Ecuador, without connections.  
  • Passengers will no longer be able to purchase this service for any flight dated after January 15, 2023.  

From January 15, 2023: 

  • Unaccompanied minor service is suspended on all Avianca routes.

NOTE: if you purchased the service prior to October 1, 2022, regardless of the date of travel, the service will be provided according to the travel dates, route and conditions originally purchased.

Remember that one of the requirements to use this service is to complete the form. Ask for it at the airport.

Conditions and restrictions
  • Confirmation of the application: There is a limited number of minors accepted on each flight. For this reason, your request must be confirmed for each way of the trip.
  • Pre-assignment of seats: If you make the reservation at our Contact Center or at our sales offices, you can choose the seat where your child will be seated. The pre-assignment is done from back to front to place them close to the crew and, if possible, next to other unaccompanied minors.
  • Refunds: Reimbursement is not available for this service.

Please note:

This service may not be requested in the following scenarios:

  • If under 5 years of age.
  • If the minor is under medical treatment or in a condition of disability. Our crew is not authorized to provide medication or medical assistance.
  • When incomplete information on the form delivered at the airport.
  • If the minor is traveling with more baggage than allowed.
  • If the minor is traveling with pets, unless the minor requires the company of emotional support pets during the flight.
  • A minor between 12 and 17 years old may not carry another minor between 0 and 12 years, unless he/she is the minor's parent. In this case, it must be proven that he/she is the father or mother of the minor, and both may travel without requiring the unaccompanied minor service.

Before the flight, verify and check that you have the required documents for unaccompanied minors. You will be asked for them at the airport. 

For the minor traveler:

  • It is very important that the minor follows our instructions throughout the experience.
  • The minor must be responsible for its carry-on baggage, electronics devices and other items.
  • At disembarkation, he/she must wait for a member of our crew to be guided.
  • The minor must wait at the airport until we help him/her to claim the luggage and accompany him/her to the airport exit.
  • We recommend traveling with only one personal item, make sure it is light so that it can be stowed under the seat.
  • The minor must bring his/her own entertainment on board, as our entertainment system is not available at this time.

For the guardian or adult responsible for the minor:

  • Consult the requirements and/or authorizations necessary for the exit and entry of minors with the corresponding immigration authority of each country.
  • Bring an additional authenticated copy of this authorization, in case the migratory authority requires it. 
  • On the day of the flight, arrive at the airport for check-in and drop-off.  You must have the name, ID number, address and phone number of the person(s) delivering and receiving the minor. 
  • The adult/guardian may not leave the airport until the minor is on board or the flight departure is confirmed.
  • Please confirm the parent/guardian picking up the minor is arriving at the airport at the flight’s scheduled arrival time.
Irregularity Management
In the following situations, minors must return to the airport of origin:
  • Inconsistencies in documents.
  • The person authorized to receive the minor does not show up.
  • By request of the immigration authority. 
Frequently Asked Questions

Will minors no longer be able to travel alone on Avianca routes?
With the changes we are implementing, minors between 12 and 17 years of age will be able to travel alone as long as they meet the requirements of local or international authorities, as appropriate. It is important to remember that the decision for your underage family member to travel alone is the responsibility of the parents and/or legal guardians.

Can I arrive at the airport and purchase the service the same day my minor child travels?
No. As of October 1, service for direct or domestic routes must be purchased 48 hours before the flight.

My child/children [ages 5-11] needs to travel to [destination] after January 15, 2023. I cannot accompany him/her, what alternatives do you have now that you no longer have that service?
According to the airline's new policies, minors up to age 11 must travel with an accompanying adult. We are always looking to ensure that the little ones travel safely.

I purchased the unaccompanied minor service before October 1 to fly in the future [on a connecting/direct/domestic route] what will happen to my [child/nephew...] if you no longer have the service?
If you purchased the service before October 1, 2022, regardless of the date of travel, the service will be provided according to the travel dates, route and according to the travel dates, routing and conditions originally purchased.

I purchased unaccompanied minor service after October 1, 2022 [on a connecting/direct/domestic route] what will happen to my [child/nephew...] if they no longer have the service?
If you purchased service after October 1, the service will only provide until January 15, 2023. 

Can my child/children travel [on a connecting/direct or domestic route] with a person I trust?
That decision is yours to make as the legal guardian of your child. If so, both will travel in compliance with the airline's service contract.

I have purchased the unaccompanied minor service [for an international connecting/point-to-point/domestic route] and want to change the date of my child's itinerary. With this change, will you maintain the service on the new date on my route [international connecting/point-to-point or domestic]?
Yes, as long as the service [international with connection/point-to-point or domestic] service was purchased prior to October 1, 2022 and there is no change in the route. 

My child will travel with [another airline/codeshare/interline] and then connect with Avianca, will you give me the service, even if you no longer have it?
The unaccompanied minor service was not, and is not available for passengers who have tickets for [codeshare/interline] routes with other airlines with other airlines that then connect to an Avianca flight.
